All-New, All-Investigative Avengers #166 – ‘New Old Challengers’

Posted on December 18, 2024December 16, 2024 by phil.wrede
The Starjammers’ Captain America (Frank Simpson, who we’ve confirmed is definitely not Captain America) rushes at Ironheart on the streets of New York City, trying to interrupt her transmission of the Starjammers’ secret recordings. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Investigative Avengers Presents… ‘New Old Challengers’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Steve Rogers, the real Captain America (dressed in his S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform from The Winter Soldier film), throws his shield at Simpson, and hits him hard in the knee.
Steve tackles Simpson, and cartwheels behind his back, yanking Simpson’s shield clear off of him in one smooth move.
Steve lands in a heroic pose, wielding both Simpson’s shield, and catching his own on the rebound.
From the Baxter Building, H.E.R.B.I.E. and Reed Richards worriedly contact Iron Man. Simultaneously, Sue and Johnny battle Kl’rt, the Super-Skrull, and Nihilus (in the form of Carnage) in a hallway.
Reed explains to Iron Man that the Baxter Building is about to be overrun by the forces of the Negative Zone. Just as Iron Man is about to blast off across town, Dr. Octopus breaks into the conversation, reporting that the Annihilation Reavers have broken through the containment shield around the Baxter Building’s portal.
Kate Neville (former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent turned superhero) punches a hole through a swarm of Reavers as Reed has to reckon with his imminent failure.
Through the windows of the Baxter Building, bright purple light streams out as numerous Reavers pound their fists against the glass and get closer and closer to breaking through.

Apologies for missing a week of comics, everybody! I got thrown for a loop by… just an obnoxious sickness. I’ve recovered – thank goodness – and we’re back to our regularly scheduled toy comic this week. I told you we’d get back to the messy action inside the Baxter Building, didn’t I?

  • Part One (wherein the Starjammers threaten the Avengers, and New York City!)
  • Part Two (wherein Iron Man, and Captain America, finally rejoin the fight)
  • Part Three (wherein Jay Hansen tells his side of the story)
  • Part Four (wherein the Starjammers’ real secrets are revealed)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
