All-New, All-Investigative Avengers #162 – ‘Hang Her Wings by the Door’

Posted on November 13, 2024November 13, 2024 by phil.wrede
On the New York City streets, the Fabulous Frog-Man faces off against the laser-rifle-carrying Jay Hansen. The Frog-Man is trying to talk Hansen into lowering his weapon. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Investigative Avengers Presents… ‘Hang Her Wings by the Door’,” is visible at the top of the image.
The Starjammer Mantis sneaks up behind Frog-Man, and renders him unconscious with her mental abilities.
The android Avenger Jocasta dodges a swipe by the Black Knight’s energy sword, and she tries to ready a magical spell to incapacitate him.
Before Jocasta can cast her spell, the Black Knight drives his sword into her chest. In the meantime, on a rooftop above, Emma Frost and Dr. Clark Connors (“played” here by an action figure of Sean Connery from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) stage their own face-off; Connors is mentally controlled by Jean Grey. He attacks Emma with his sword, but it impacts helplessly against her diamond skin, into which she transforms right before impact.
Emma kicks Connors away and turns angrily to Jean. Jean charges her telepathic energies, putting the next phase of her plan into motion. Meanwhile, on the street, the Black Widow and Drax each ready themselves to fight.
The Widow dodges Drax’s charge, leaping high over him and shooting him in the back repeatedly with her wrist-mounted blasters.
As the Widow lands, she continues to shoot Drax, to little effect, at least until Corsair sneaks up behind her and presses the barrel of his pistol against her head. She stops fighting. A block away, Ironheart and the Scorpion are about to begin fighting.
The battle is cut short, though, when She-Hulk grabs onto the Scorpion’s cybernetic tail and throws him high into the sky.

To familiar readers, this probably doesn’t look much like the start of a new storyarc in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, and that’s pretty true; this comic strip is very much a continuation of the last several months of strips! However, this is the start of a newly focused period in the story, and for that reason, I think it deserves to begin a new chapter in my ongoing saga.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
