All-New, All-Investigate Avengers #165 – ‘Secrets Within Secrets’

Posted on December 4, 2024December 1, 2024 by phil.wrede
Iron Man (in his Extremis armor) and Captain America (in his Winter Soldier costume) pose dramatically in the nighttime streets of New York City. The title of this comic, “All-New, All-Investigative Avengers Presents… ‘Secrets Within Secrets’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Jay Hansen and his Starjammers face off angrily against Cap and Iron Man. Without any warning, Jean Grey joins the Avengers, and tells Hansen that she’s uncovered all of the real secrets of the Starjammers, after accessing the memories of one of Hansen’s associates.
In caption bubble voiceover, Jean reveals the truth of the identities of Yondu, Corsair, Emma Frost, Drax, Mantis, and Nebula.
The Starjammers’ Captain America faces off against our own Cap, as this conversation is going on. The real Cap tells the imposter that they know his actual backstory, too.
In flashback, we see the unmasked Starjammer Cap getting handed his own knockoff shield by Jay Hansen. Hansen refers to him as, “Mister Simpson,” which familiar Marvel readers/viewers might recognize as a reference to Frank Simpson, historically known as the villain Nuke.
Simpson pulls up his Captain America cowl, vowing to do Hansen’s bidding, and replace the real Cap.
Back in the present, the two Caps are about to come to blows, while Ironheart joins Iron Man, in preparation for broadcasting the information about the Starjammers across the nation, and the world.
Frank Simpson won’t stand for this, and shoves Cap aside as he rushes towards Ironheart.

To hear Jay Hansen tell it, he’s basically Tony Stark and Nick Fury, wrapped up into one guy! But, the billionaire’s side of the story isn’t the whole truth (shocking!). All this, plus the long-awaited origin of the Starjammers’ Captain America, to boot!

It’s probably asking for trouble, making even a brief speech that barely nods at inherent goodness in the collective heart of the public, given how last month’s election turned out in the real world, but that’s not how things shook out in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe. Besides, the fiction that’s meant the most to me in my life are superhero comics and Star Trek, which are both often about how people can rise above the things that make them petty, crummy, and cruel, and do better – if I can’t hold onto that, even a little, I should probably shut my computer and this website. Doing this kind of work helps me hold onto it, in fact!

As always, look below if you’d like links to the “main story” so far, or if you’re just in the mood to spend some more time at Pizzarat.net!

  • Part One (wherein the Starjammers threaten the Avengers, and New York City!)
  • Part Two (wherein Iron Man, and Captain America, finally rejoin the fight)
  • Part Three (wherein Jay Hansen tells his side of the story)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
