All-New, All-Interlude Avengers #136 – ‘From May to Might’

Posted on April 24, 2024April 22, 2024 by phil.wrede
At the secret elevator entrance to a hidden S.H.I.E.L.D. (“Supreme Homeland Intervention, Executive Law-Enforcement Division”) base, Agent Wurmser (“played” here by an action figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger from the movie Terminator: Dark Fate) and President Kirby (who’s named after legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, and “played” here by an action figure of Bruce Campbell from the Evil Dead series) prepare for their descent. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Interlude Avengers Presents… ‘From May to Might’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Wurmser and the President have a roundabout discussion about the proper role of S.H.I.E.L.D., as Wurmser activates the hidden control in the elevator car, and they drop far below the main building.
As they walk through the special hidden tunnel path, leading between the “front” building and the actual S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, the President makes a point that Wurmser finds rather depressing.
The President and his S.H.I.E.L.D. escort arrive at the base, where they’re greeted by Agents G.W. Bridge, Dum Dum Dugan, and Charles Little Sky.
While the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and the President continue their discussion, Iron Man, Captain America, and the android Jocasta all meet on the exterior helipad of Avengers Tower.
Jocasta very pointedly tells Iron Man that she and Tony Stark (who, we know, is Iron Man beneath the armor) need to end their romance. Iron Man asks if she has any specific reason.
In short, Jocasta feels she’s one of the many projects Tony picks up and discards quickly, and she needs a partner who can be more attentive. A partner like…
…Captain America! After making a typical smart-aleck remark, Iron Man seems supportive of their decision.
Iron Man asks Cap to help him handle the false rumor that he planted with the Daily Bugle, and the strip concludes with Thor and the Beast staring out a side window of Avengers Tower, witnessing what appears to be a fight between Iron Man and Cap!

I’d love to say that this momentary Jocasta-Iron Man-Captain America love triangle was part of the plan, when I initially hatched the Daily Bugle disinformation scheme, but the story took itself in a different direction. One might call it a… Marvel’s Civil War-esque direction (in the most generous way).

Famously, the “honeymoon” period for new couples in the Marvel Universe doesn’t always last to the end of the wedding, so who knows what challenges Steve and Jocasta might have to face! There’s The Wanda Factor, for instance!

As this “interlude” portion of the story just stretches on, and on, it’s ever more crucial, I think, to include catch-up links, in case your memory needs a refresher (or you want to revisit some of the previous weeks’ excitement):

  • Part One (wherein nearly every major current running plotline is touched upon!)
  • Part Two (wherein Beast has had it up to here!)
  • Part Three (wherein Tony has one plan, while Steve and Jocasta may have another!)

And, finally… has it really been since last August that Thor graced us with his presence? Well, I’m sure he’s keeping busy!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
