All-New, All-Interlude Avengers #137 – ‘Listen, You Will Find’

Posted on May 1, 2024May 2, 2024 by phil.wrede
Broadcasting from his office in the Daily Bugle building, J. Jonah Jameson rants at length about a recent “battle” between Iron Man and Captain America (shown in an inset). The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Interlude Avengers Presents… ‘Listen, You Will Find’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Jonah provides running commentary over shadily-obtained video footage of the “fight,” as it is interrupted by the android Jocasta, and her apparent magic abilities! She mystically immobilizes Iron Man, and lifts him helplessly into the air!
Jocasta holds Iron Man aloft, over the edge of the Avengers tower helipad, as she, Cap, and Iron Man all appear to have a discussion.
Jonah promises analysis and commentary of this event in the next episode of his program, then cuts to a commercial paid for by Hammer Industries. Justin Hammer, here, is “played” by an action figure of Jeff Goldblum from the Jurassic Park films.
Hammer expresses his frustration at how his popularity appears to have declined, now that Jay Hansen is the hot new billionaire flavor of the month, and he promises exciting news coming from Hammer social media accounts. Before Jonah can continue, his broadcast is interrupted by an opposing message from Jay Hansen!
Hansen assures Hammer that he’s not scared of him. As he regains control of his broadcast, Jonah quickly transitions to his next scheduled interviewee: presidential candidate, the Reverend William Stryker (“played” here by an action figure of Michael Fassbender from the X-Men films).
Jonah tries to press Stryker on the precise nature of his campaign platform; Stryker uses coded language that his audience understands, but that technically allows him to refute accusations of racism/stoking violence/etc. Stryker refuses to bow to Jonah’s pressure.
At another, more secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, G.W. Bridge and Agent Wurmser (“played” here by an action figure of Arnold Schwarzenegger from the film Terminator: Dark Fate) approach the government’s own homebrew portal to the Negative Zone!

Justin Hammer’s finally come out of hiding, after his disastrous gala! Iron Man, Cap, and Jocasta move on to the next phase of Tony’s (modified, now) plan to mess with the Daily Bugle! We peer into the Negative Zone for the first time, since last September (and, a hat tip to anybody who picked up on my not-too-subtle clues about it, as the object of Hansen and the President’s schemes)! What a busy day it’s been, in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe!

Obviously, my take on the William Stryker character hews more near to his original version, from Chris Claremont and Brent Eric Anderson’s God Loves, Man Kills comic, than Brian Cox’s character in X2: X-Men United (although, there’s not much distance separating any of these characters, at their core – the book is a high-water mark in American superhero comics, and to try to step out of its shadow would be to ignore everything it, and X-Men stories generally, do well). I don’t think you have to be paying very close attention at all to see why he’s (still, unfortunately) a stunningly relevant character, today.

I think this week’s comic puts a button on this “interlude” portion of the story, so… fingers crossed that next week will (finally) begin a new arc! If you want, or need, to get caught up on the interlude-so-far, please feel free to visit the entries linked below!

  • Part One (wherein nearly every major current running plotline is touched upon!)
  • Part Two (wherein Beast has had it up to here!)
  • Part Three (wherein Tony has one plan, while Steve and Jocasta may have another!)
  • Part Four (wherein the Avengers love it, when different plans come together!)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
