All-New, Rebranded Avengers #29 – ‘Everything You Say to Me’

Posted on July 15, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
In New York City, Rage, Black Widow, and the Falcon stand along the street, watching the activity in a nearby park. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Rebranded Avengers Presents… ‘Everything You Say to Me’,” is visible at the top of the image.
In the park, we see one couple harassing the elderly operators of a local food truck, although we can’t hear what they’re saying.
As the activity level outside the food truck gets more intense, the Avengers decide to step in and try to defuse the situation.
Rage and the Falcon take the lead, and Black Widow remains across the street for backup.
The instigating couple demand that the Avengers make the operators of the food truck open their vehicle for some kind of inspection, in a… privileged kind of way.
The Avengers, and the food truck operators, don’t understand what they claim to be looking for, and amidst the vague accusations of an “insidious plot,” a mysterious vehicle arrives across the street…
Black Widow alerts Rage and the Falcon to three HYDRA agents emerging from an APC that has stopped along the street.
The Avengers get ready to throw down with HYDRA.
The Avengers are accused of being agents of the “deep state,” and they know there’s no avoiding the fight to come.
On the top half of the image, the HYDRA agents fire their guns into the food truck, demolishing its frame and wheels. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

I spent pretty much the entire production of the first big arc of the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe trying to figure out which group of goons would succeed the A.I.M. agents, once their time in the spotlight was wrapped. HYDRA’s never been the most savory group of bad guys, in the first place, and tragically, the steadily-declining public life of the United States offered a pretty great model for how I could put my own little spin on their characterization and make them even worse than usual!

As I mentioned in the notes of the previous strip, and several others, besides, I’m trying to be deliberate about building a good supporting cast for my version the Avengers, and all sorts of characters, be they genuinely likable, love-to-hate-able, or truly… unpleasant. I feel a little bad for the company that makes the dollhouse toys I’ve included as the whacked-out, conspiracy-mongering suburban couple here, but their facial expressions absolutely capture the manic energy characters like that require.

On a lighter note, I’m really grateful to the moment of inspiration that the universe gave me, when I came up with the Falcon’s line, “You be the good hero; I’ll be even nicer.” In my head, he sounds so exhausted when he says it.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
