All-New, All-Discrete Avengers #67 – ‘Watching You, Watching You’

Posted on November 23, 2022September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
The ominous exterior of Castle Doom in Latveria. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Discrete Avengers Presents… ‘Watching You, Watching You’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Tied up in Doctor Doom’s basement laboratory, Luis and Tigra discuss how they might escape their predicament. Doom’s android ally, Jocasta, promises they won’t be able to.
Jocasta begins to cast a magic spell, while the Secret Avengers - Spider-Woman, Deathlok, Iron Fist, and U.S. Agent - sneak around the city of Doomstadt, trying to find a way into the castle.
U.S. Agent tries to reconcile his admiration for the orderliness of the city with its total lack of freedom.
Deathlok finds a way to electronically access the construction plans of Castle Doom, as Jocasta lifts Luis into the air, wrapped in a cocoon of mystic, green energy.
Jocasta releases Luis from her grasp, and he falls on the floor, hard. She offers him a moment’s respite, before beginning her interrogation anew.
Iron Fist and U.S. Agent identify a building that might give them quick access to the castle.
Jocasta puts her questions to Luis again, but is interrupted as Doctor Doom finally steps into the lab.
We learn that it’s Jocasta herself that Tigra and Luis were sent to retrieve; Jocasta is somehow being called by Stark to come back to him, constantly.
At the top half of the image, Doctor Doom vows to magically extract Luis’ humanity from his essence, and imbue it in Jocasta. At the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

I like to think that, in these two latest strips, I’ve really channeled some of the joie de vivre of the Avengers West Coast comics that I love so much (on top of the Secret Avengers hat-tipping). The stakes are still real and high, the villain is about as deadly as you can get, and yet, still, our heroes can’t stop bickering! How are they going to possibly save the world, if they can’t put their differences aside for even five minutes?

That’s a good question. Here’s another: who do you think got the best lines in this strip? I think U.S. Agent runs away with the award, but I’m definitely willing to entertain other opinions!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
