I’m sure there are multiple full dissertations about how the best villains are often their own worst enemies, but even if it’s a commonly accepted truth, it’s still true! Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor is my favorite example, how he relies so heavily on Ned Beatty’s Otis, who is arguably the least competent henchman in film history. Lex is followed closely by Darth Vader, and his compulsion to murder any subordinate brave enough to fail.
Baron Zemo, in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, is growing toward taking a place in that pantheon. Since the Baron isn’t exactly in prime villain shape anymore, that means he’s extra-reliant on henchmen. His HYDRA boys might be… proud… of themselves, but that doesn’t mean they’re much good at being bad.
