All-New, Rebranded Avengers #39 – ‘Clowns to the Left of Me’

Posted on September 23, 2021September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
In the gym at Avengers Tower, Rage and Domino are sparring, as the sun comes up. The title of the comic strip, “Clowns to the Left of Me’,” is visible at the bottom of the image.
Domino challenges Rage to come at her, and he tells her exactly what kind of punch he’s going to throw.
Domino ducks his first punch, and catches the second in her hands.
Domino flips Rage over her shoulder, and pins him against the floor.
Thor approaches, telling Domino that they have visitors. Official visitors.
The NYPD officer from previous video conference calls, Officer Osafer, as well as a Detective McDuffie (named in honor of legendary comics writer Dwayne McDuffie) say they are waiting to meet the Avengers, even when Domino arrives.
McDuffie encourages Osafer to take a walk, and leave him to talk to Domino.
Under a little protest, Osafer walks away. When Domino makes a dismissive remark, McDuffie defends her, mentioning that Osafer was the only cop willing to come with him to the tower.
McDuffie drops the bombshell he’s been waiting to share: that he thinks people in the New York state government are in league with HYDRA.
At the top half of the image, Domino asks McDuffie to bring her some proof. At the bottom half of the image, we can see the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

A training session is always a good way to kick off a fresh direction in a story, I think! A conversation and some low-stakes action? What better way to set the table for everything to come than that?

Thor sure is staying busy, isn’t he? Between general morale-boosting work, and driving the bus to the Vault, and apparently doing admin work at Avengers Tower, it’s amazing he gets out and gets as much done as he does!

Also, you had to figure that not everybody in the New York government was out to get the Avengers. If anybody was going to be on the side of our favorite heroes, it would be the police detective named in honor of Dwayne McDuffie!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
