Space Ghost: Making the Most #3 – Neo!

Posted on July 19, 2021January 20, 2024 by phil.wrede
Still trapped in the same studio/prison void, Space Ghost announces that a surprise guest will be joining him, today!
Space Ghost introduces Neo, from The Matrix movies, by unsubtly referencing other films that have starred Keanu Reeves: The Replacements, Point Break, Speed, and John Wick, as well as Reeves’ position as the bass player for the band Dogstar.
Space Ghost and Neo reminisce about how long they’ve known one another, and Space Ghost references his audition for The Matrix, where he was apparently also up for the starring role.
Neo reminds Space Ghost that the role of Neo was written specifically for him, but Space Ghost argues passionately that he could have played the part just as well.
Neo snaps his fingers, and claims that Space Ghost would have had better luck learning to make guns appear out of thin air (which Neo does, with the snap). Space Ghost hypothesizes that his version of The Matrix could have been rated PG-13, which would have translated into better box office receipts.
Neo poses dramatically, and replies, “Yeah. Like the movie needed your help to make money.”
Neo transforms the pistols he’s carrying into machine guns. Space Ghost asks if Neo thinks his career stalled due to a lack of firearms training. Neo offers to help Space Ghost learn.
As they storm off the set, Space Ghost implies that he’d like to use Bloodshot’s gift mug for target practice.
The credits for the comic strip, including the creators of Space Ghost, and the makers of the film The Matrix, and the creator Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and the use of fonts by Blambot, and that the character photography, script, and lettering were all done by me, Phil Wrede.

Plenty of digital and actual ink has been spilled about The Matrix, enough that I don’t need to add my voice to whatever chorus is loudest at this particular moment. I do, however, think that I need to take Space Ghost’s trip down memory lane here to its most ridiculous conclusion, and recreate some scenes from the original movie with him in the Neo role.

On a personal history note, I bought these Space Ghost and Neo action figures on separate trips to Media Play, and they sat on a shelf next to one another for years, before getting packed away in boxes, and eventually freed to act out this comic. Sometimes, if you’re patient for long enough, inspiration will eventually strike!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
