Space Ghost: Making the Most #2 – V.I.N.C.E.N.T.!

Posted on July 13, 2021January 20, 2024 by phil.wrede
Again, in his white void prison/studio, Space Ghost welcomes his audience back to another installment of his show.
As Space Ghost points to a strange star he’s recently seen in what passes for the sky, that same star keeps getting bigger and bigger, until it’s revealed to be some kind of meteor.
The flaming ball of rubble from the sky is actually revealed to be the android V.I.N.C.E.N.T., from the Disney film The Black Hole. V.I.N.C.E.N.T. asks Space Ghost if any of his crewmates have come by, but sadly, they have not.
Space Ghost tells V.I.N.C.E.N.T. that, now that he’s here in the void with him, they are trapped together.
They agree to join forces, to try and escape.
V.I.N.C.E.N.T. and Space Ghost take turns making fun of one another’s names.
Space Ghost can’t help but observe that V.I.N.C.E.N.T. seems to have a smart quip for everything.
Space Ghost then offers V.I.N.C.E.N.T. a position on his show, in addition to his friendship. V.I.N.C.E.N.T. is terribly nervous, to learn that they are being broadcast.
The credits for the comic strip, including the creators of Space Ghost, and the makers of the film the Black Hole, and the creator Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and the use of fonts by Blambot, and that the character photography, script, and lettering were all done by me, Phil Wrede.

In my post for the last installment of this comic, I mentioned how formative Space Ghost: Coast to Coast was to my sense of humor. On the other side of the coin – my sense of dread – Disney’s The Black Hole probably holds a similar influential position. If you’ve not come across it before, dear reader, Jason Heller’s article about the movie sums up its potency better than I ever could. It’s not a perfect movie (far from it), but if you encounter it at the right moment, it’s better than perfect. It sears itself on your brain.

I’m not hypothesizing here that Space Ghost’s intangible prison exists in the same alternate universe where the surviving heroes of The Black Hole ended up; I just think V.I.N.C.E.N.T. is a fantastic little character, and thought he and SG would bounce well off one another.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
