All-New, Reacquired Avengers #65 – ‘They’re Watching You’

Tony Stark and the mutant superhero Beast sit, waiting for a video meeting to start. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Reacquired Avengers Presents… ‘They’re Watching You’,” is visible at the bottom of the page.
President Kirby (named for legendary comics creator Jack “the King” Kirby, and “played” in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe by an action figure of Bruce Campbell’s character Ash Williams from the Evil Dead series) signs on, just before Doctor Doom joins the meeting.
Tony tries to start the meeting, but Doom announces that he has invited Justin Hammer (“played” by an action figure of Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr. Ian Malcolm, from Jurassic Park) to weigh in.
The President cheers Hammer’s arrival; they are clearly friendly. Tony is not happy about this.
Hammer reaches off-frame, pops, and holds against his webcam an emergency flare, theatrically making fun of Tony’s predicament (having two of his agents captured by the security forces of Doctor Doom’s nation, Latveria).
Hammer activates a second flare, and before the meeting can go any further off-track, Doctor Doom bellows a command that they return to the task at hand.
She-Hulk somewhat belatedly joins the meeting, herself, in her capacity as one of Tony Stark’s lawyers. Doom declares that his forces will hold Luis and Tigra as captives, until Stark comes to claim them.

Back in Avengers’ Tower, Tony gives the go-ahead to Spider-Woman and Iron Fist to stage their rescue mission.

We’re taking a brief break from Election Season adventures today to hop back into the story of Tigra and Luis’ covert operation into Dr. Doom’s nation, Latveria. Well, it’s not so covert anymore, since they got captured! When you’re getting discussed on a video conference call with the Doctor, and Tony Stark, and the President of the United States, you’re pretty… overt, I’d say.

There are a few brainstorms I’ve had while working on this comic that truly are moments of inspiration, and “casting” Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park as Justin Hammer is one of them. Finding an excuse for him to bust out his emergency flare accessory, and to give him a moment to bounce off President Kirby… those are the kinds of moments I live for, while making this comic.
