Star Wars – A Mandalorian, Episode II: Unlikely Guardians

Posted on October 8, 2020January 5, 2024 by phil.wrede
The title page of the comic strip, the silhouette of a Mandalorian warrior walking alone. The title, “Episode II: Unlikely Guardians,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.
Two First Order stormtroopers: one in white armor, and one in the red armor of the Red Fury Corps, patrol a hallway in a hidden Imperial base. They discuss the identity of their incoming commanding officer, whose name is not, “Captain Plasma,” as one mistakenly says, but, “Captain Phasma.”
The Red Fury trooper is not impressed with what he knows of Captain Phasma, and the trooper in white armor disagrees. The Red Fury trooper mocks his friend, and the white armor trooper suggests the only reason the Red Fury trooper got his promotion is because he’s General Hux’s cousin.
The trooper in white armor details some of Phasma’s more impressive accomplishments, but the Red Fury trooper refuses to believe anything he didn’t see with his own eyes.
The Red Fury trooper is, suddenly, beckoned over the intercom to report to Captain Phasma’s division, and he immediately changes his tone. Where he once was arrogant and dismissive, now he’s genuinely terrified of Phasma.
As the Red Fury trooper walks off, the trooper in white armor continues his patrol. That is, he does so until he’s confronted by the heavy Mandalorian, who steps out of the shadows. Presumably, this is on the same world where he awoke in the previous comic strip!
The heavy Mandalorian knocks the trooper in white armor unconscious, and then goes to confront the Red Fury trooper.
The heavy Mandalorian demands the Red Fury trooper direct him to the hangar bay as the comic strip concludes. In the bottom-right corner of the image are the credits for this comic strip, identifying where the stock photographs (for backgrounds) were sourced, crediting George Lucas for creating Star Wars, and identifying me (Phil Wrede) as the scriptwriter, character photographer, and letterer of the comic.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the faceless cannon fodder characters, though I’d obviously prefer it if they weren’t of the evil and/or super-toxic variety, as most stormtroopers probably are. And, if regular old Imperial stormtroopers are evil and toxic, just imagine how much worse Red Fury troopers are! Thousands of times worse, I bet!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
