Star Wars – A Mandalorian, Episode III: Escape to the Stars

Posted on October 14, 2020January 5, 2024 by phil.wrede
The title page of the comic strip, the silhouette of a Mandalorian warrior walking alone. The title, “Episode III: Escape To The Stars,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.
At the other end of the underground Imperial hangar bay, the heavy Mandalorian sees his ship: a YT-2400 freighter named the Clever Dragon. He tries to run past two patrolling stormtroopers, who open fire at him as he passes.
The stormtroopers’ blaster fire misses the heavy Mandalorian, and he causes them to rethink their pursuit entirely when he fires a blast of flame from his wrist-mounted flamethrower, setting the hangar deck on fire.
The heavy Mandalorian enters his ship, rushing to the cockpit. The stormtrooper argue amongst themselves as the Mandalorian readies his spaceship for takeoff.
As the stormtroopers continue to argue, the heavy Mandalorian’s ship takes off, and blasts out of the hangar.
The stormtroopers run out after it, sadly watching as the Clever Dragon rockets into the sky. From the darkness of the hangar, a pair of metal-clad boots stomp nearer and nearer.
The stormtroopers steel themselves for their punishment as Captain Phasma details the punishment she has in store for any who fail her.
Phasma offers the troopers an opportunity to redeem themselves, which they gladly accept.
The iris of the “camera” closes around Phasma’s helmet, as she leads the troopers off to their fate.
The credits of the comic strip, identifying where the stock photographs (for backgrounds and VFX) were sourced, crediting George Lucas for creating Star Wars, and identifying me (Phil Wrede) as the scriptwriter, character photographer, and letterer of the comic.

Like many boys who owned a Nintendo 64, I thought the Shadows of the Empire game was pretty awesome. Sure, it peaked really early with the Battle of Hoth level, and never really lived up to the promise of that first level, but Dash Rendar’s ship was awesome! So awesome that I had to incorporate a YT-2400 of my very own, in my comic!

Besides, we got the Rogue Squadron games thanks to that Hoth level, so regardless of how poorly the rest of Shadows‘ playability has aged (or was, from the first time I switched on the game), I owe it a debt of gratitude.

Captain Phasma is also awesome, and I’d like to give her more of a chance to deliver on her awesome potential here.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
