Star Wars – A Mandalorian, Episode I: A Rude Awakening

Posted on October 1, 2020January 5, 2024 by phil.wrede
The title page of the comic strip, the silhouette of a Mandalorian warrior walking alone. The title, “Episode I: A Rude Awakening,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.
A heavy Mandalorian warrior awakens in a desert wasteland, unarmed and unsure of where he is. As he looks around, he fails to notice an Imperial range trooper, who observes him from up above.
The Mandalorian looks around, trying to get his bearings and identify his location, as the range trooper focuses the sights of his blaster rifle on him.
The range trooper opens fire, but completely misses the Mandalorian, who runs and dives under cover before any laser blast can strike.
The Mandalorian discovers an emergency holdout blaster within his armor, with sufficient charge for a few shots. He stays hidden under cover as the range trooper approaches, climbing loudly down the mountainside.
The Mandalorian fires, and hits the range trooper, but not enough even to pierce the Imperial’s armor. It’s now the trooper’s turn to retreat under the rocks.
The Mandalorian and the trooper size one another up at a distance, each unsure of what the other plans to do. The Mandalorian has one final weapon to employ: he has a small amount of fuel in his wrist-mounted flamethrower.
The range trooper rushes the Mandalorian, but quickly regrets his decision. The Mandalorian fires his flamethrower, and his aim is true. The trooper is engulfed entirely in fire.
The trooper runs off the side of the mountain, to his death. The Mandalorian gradually climbs down after, passing the trooper’s blaster rifle, and eventually, after much searching, finds his own missing heavy rifle.
The Mandalorian retrieves his weapon, and continues to search for where exactly in the galaxy he is. In the bottom-right corner of the image are the credits for this comic strip, identifying where the stock photographs (for backgrounds and visual effects) were sourced. Moreover, George Lucas should be credited for creating Star Wars, and me (Phil Wrede) as the scriptwriter, character photographer, and letterer of the comic.

This is my first real toy comic project, the initial idea from which everything else on this website sprang. And, we have the first season of The Mandalorian show on Disney+ to thank for it. My imagination hadn’t been fired by anything the way that first season of the show set my brain alight; I wanted more of it, any way I could get it. So, I made my own! Kind of.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
