All-New, Overworked Avengers #43 – ‘I Hear That Whistle Blowin’

Posted on January 5, 2022September 17, 2023 by phil.wrede
In the office of the warden of The Vault (per the location caption), two Vault Guardsmen shove Shatterstar forward. The title of the comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘I Hear That Whistle Blowin’,” is visible at the top of the image.
The Guardsmen are dismissed from the warden’s office (we don’t see who the warden is, exactly), and head outside to the cafeteria. One asks the other if he can borrow his gun, so as to mess with Thunderstrike.
When they make fun of him, Thunderstrike reminds the Guardsmen that, technically, he outranks them, and they can’t believe it.
The Guardsmen tell Thunderstrike that he only got this job because Thor vouched for him.
Thunderstrike challenges the Guardsmen to a fight, and summons his magic hammer.
Another Guardsman in the sky attempts to intercept Thunderstrike’s weapon in midair, and the hammer takes him for a ride, instead.
The hammer drags the Guardsman across the ground, and stops when Thunderstrike catches it.
The first two Guardsmen prepare for the fight, now that Thunderstrike finally has his weapon.
From out of the sky, Darkhawk drops down, to interrupt the action.
At the top half of the image, Darkhawk stands up for Thunderstrike, putting himself between the Guardsmen and Thunderstrike. The Guardsmen immediately back off, declaring that Darkhawk is, “pretty cool.” At the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Happy 2022, everybody!

Some focused free time between academic semesters helped me get back on track with the comic! In an attempt to achieve some better work/life/hobby balance, I’m going to go back to the schedule where I alternate a “main story” comic with a 4-panel “joke” comic each week, so while that main story may not progress along at the same clip at which it was moving before, at least it’ll be moving, now!

Slight progress is still progress, I think.

It’s been a while since we visited the Vault in the Phil Wrede Marvel Action Figure Comic Universe, and since Shatterstar was hauled off to that prison, and longer still since Shatterstar cut down the A.I.M. agent who recklessly attacked him in the aftermath of the big battle at A.I.M.’s now-presumably-abandoned headquarters. Not that Shatterstar’s the main player in the action this week, but if you need a memory refresher, those three hyperlink’d entries in the text above should get the job done!

Welcome back; I hope you’re as excited to see what’s in store in the comic as I am to make it happen!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
