All-New, Overworked Avengers #55 – ‘Time Is Tight’

Posted on June 22, 2022September 18, 2023 by phil.wrede
On the roof of the Avengers Tower, King T’Chaka of Wakanda and his son, T’Challa, each in their Black Panther garb, walk across a landing platform. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, Overworked Avengers Presents… ‘Time is Tight’,” is visible on the top of the image.
War Machine and Domino greet T’Challa and T’Chaka in the observation lounge.
War Machine and T’Challa do their secret friendship handshake.
Everybody makes fun of T’Challa for being unable to stand up to his sister, the princess Shuri.
Domino, once again, is faced with the prospect of needing to resign from the Avengers.
Domino explains to T’Chaka that she thinks her ability to affect real change is outside of the Avengers. She obliquely references the possibility of her candidacy for mayor.
T’Chaka and T’Challa tell her they support whatever decision she makes, and encourage her to not let her ties to the Avengers whither.
T’Chaka makes a joke about Wakanda interfering in the election to help Domino, but T’Challa steps all over it by denying that Wakanda would ever do such a thing.
Tony Stark calls Domino on her phone, and asks to speak to T’Chaka. The Wakandan king asks Domino to tell Stark that he’s already left.

It looks like Domino is taking Lt. Governor Gerber’s talk about her polling numbers seriously, if she’s going to quit the Avengers again.* At least she’s responsible enough to only focus her energy on one big, world-changing project at a time; if Tony ran for mayor, he’d surely be trying to run the company and be Iron Man in secret at the same time.

What I was especially excited to get to do with this strip, aside from advancing the plot along, was to get these four characters in a room together, without anybody disrupting the flow of their conversation. They’re all naturally funny, in their own complimentary ways, and I think they bounce off one another very well. I especially like War Machine and T’Challa’s completely unplanned friendship handshake; the words just came to me as I was moving their arms into the “Wakanda forever!” pose, and I was smart enough to write them down, before I forgot.

*Hey, it’s an Avengers comic. People are going to quit and rejoin all the time. Get on board, if you’re going to get on board.

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
