Star Wars – A Mandalorian, Episode VIII: Any Landing You Can Walk Away From

Posted on November 18, 2020January 5, 2024 by phil.wrede
The title page of the comic strip, the silhouette of a Mandalorian warrior walking alone. The title, “Episode VIII: Any Landing You Can Walk Away From,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.
Captain Phasma and her two stormtrooper trainees launch from the Star Destroyer Blasphemer in orbit of the planet Catooine.
They identify a Corellian transport and an X-Wing leaving the planet’s surface. This freighter is a YT-1300 (and is, in fact, the Millennium Falcon), not the YT-2400 that our Mandalorian protagonist flies. Phasma and the stormtroopers either don’t know this, or don’t care, for they give pursuit.
The Falcon and the X-Wing break formation; the Red Fury stormtrooper attacks the X-Wing.
The silver stormtrooper and Phasma go after the Falcon. The Red Fury trooper tries to open fire on the X-Wing, but misses completely.
The Falcon jumps to light speed before the TIEs can attack it. The X-Wing remains in orbit, and the Red Fury trooper continues his pursuit.
The TIEs return to formation and concentrate their fire on the X-Wing, blasting it to pieces.
The X-Wing falls back into the planet’s atmosphere. Emerging from the wreckage is ace New Republic pilot, Wedge Antilles.
Wedge removes his helmet and introduces himself to a character off-panel, who is eventually revealed to be the one true Mandalorian, Din Djarin, star of the Disney+ series of the same name.
The credits of the comic strip, identifying where the stock photographs (for backgrounds) were sourced, crediting George Lucas for creating Star Wars, and identifying me (Phil Wrede) as the scriptwriter, character photographer, and letterer of the comic.

So, obviously, this strip throws you, the reader, a bit of a curve ball – the Mandalorian revealed at the end of the strip is Mando, of The Mandalorian show, rather than the heavy Mandalorian whose adventures we’ve been following the whole time! If you want a reason for this decision, it’s just that I thought it would be funny if Phasma, her goon squad, and her network of informants across the First Order all completely misidentified the Corellian freighter that escaped her custody. This is a YT-1300; the Clever Dragon is a YT-2400! And, given that it’s Wedge Antilles piloting the escorting X-Wing, there’s a better than even chance that YT-1300 was the Millennium Falcon!

Like that one nerd character in that Simpsons episode (season 8, episode 4, ‘The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochy Show’) said, “I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder!”

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
