All-New, All-Thoughtful Avengers #86 – ‘I Wonder’

Posted on April 12, 2023September 19, 2023 by phil.wrede
Spider-Man, in his greyscale Spider-Armor, stands next to Iron Man on a New York City rooftop at night. The title of this comic strip, “All-New, All-Thoughtful Avengers Presents… ‘I Wonder’,” is visible at the top of the image.
Iron Man tries to impart some wisdom onto Spider-Man, but Spider-Man shouts back that he’s tired of being the receiver for everybody’s wisdom.
Spider-Man complains that not everything has meaning behind it, and that sometimes random bad things just happen, like when the Red Skull shot him through the leg and put him out of commission for a time. Iron Man reminds Spider-Man that he can make meaning out of that randomness by how he reacts to it.
Spider-Man says he’s accepting responsibility for his decisions, but Iron Man shouts back that he’s making bad decisions!
Spider-Man accuses Iron Man of having nothing of value to teach him, since he’s just a hired gun, who goes wherever Tony Stark tells him to go, and does whatever he’s told to do. He makes no decisions, either, Spider-Man declares!
Iron Man tells Spider-Man that he knows nothing about what it means to be Iron Man, and that he’s apparently even forgotten what it means to be Spider-Man!
Spider-Man keeps arguing with Iron Man, and Iron Man finally decides there’s only one way he can get Spider-Man to listen…
Iron Man reveals that, beneath the armor, he’s really billionaire/genius/playboy/philanthropist Tony Stark!
Spider-Man’s aghast at this dramatic reveal!
On the top half of the image, Stark runs his hands through his hair, glad to have finally found a way to make Spider-Man listen. On the bottom half of the image are the credits for the comic strip, citing the Unsplash users whose photographs were the background art, the ownership of Marvel by Disney, the creation of Marvel characters by actual human beings, and the figure photography/script/lettering by me, Phil Wrede.

Last week, I mentioned trying to tell some stories that dig a little more deeply into what it means to do the kinds of things superheroes do. If I’d been thinking more clearly, I would have saved that remark for this week, because that’s… pretty much this week’s entire strip!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
