The Rumble in the Riddle!

Posted on October 3, 2022January 14, 2024 by phil.wrede
Batman swings into the base of operations often used by his foes (a playset from the Batman ’66 TV series), and is met by the Riddler, who’s wearing purple trunks over his green costume, and sporting boxing gloves, to boot. Batman asks, “Riddle me this, Nygma, why do rats always abandon a sinking ship?”
The Riddler raises his fists, and replies, “Because, belfry-brains, they have no vision beyond their immediate survival!”
Batman assumes a fighting pose, saying, “…That’s not a bad answer.”
Without any warning, the Riddler strikes out with a sharp jab from his right fist, smacking Batman across the jaw, as he crows, “Kinda punchy, isn’t it?”
Recovered from the surprise blow, Batman flips out sharp, small Batarangs from between his fingers. He growls at the Riddler, “You never know when to quit, do you?”
The Riddler takes off running and declares, “Some puzzles are beyond even the Riddler!”
The credits for this comic strip, listing the original creators of each character and series, the use of fonts by Blambot, and the photography, script, and lettering, which were done by me, Phil Wrede.

One of the wonderful things about characters who’ve been adapted dozens, even hundreds of times over by all manner of creative folks on paper, in live-action, animation, plastic, digital spaces, etc., is that everybody can have their own favorite take on those characters. There can even be times that your favorite version is one that somebody else has never heard of before!

There are plenty of great versions of the Riddler out there, but Frank Gorshin’s will likely always be my favorite. The Batman ’66 villains were uniformly great at going from hilarious to murderous in the blink of an eye; Gorshin’s rubber limbs and face were incredible at enabling the Riddler’s deadly pendulum-swinging.

(If you enjoyed this, but you missed the previous comic, where Joker and Harley faced off against the Riddler, why not read it now?)

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
