Star Wars – A Mandalorian, Episode VI: Flyby

Posted on November 3, 2020December 23, 2024 by phil.wrede
The title page of the comic strip, the silhouette of a Mandalorian warrior walking alone. The title, “Episode VI: Flyby,” is visible in the top-left corner of the image.
Aboard the Clever Dragon, the Mandalorian and R5 travel to the world of Mon Amara, a Calamari colony world that’s neutral in the galactic conflict. When they drop out of hyperspace, they see a squadron of TIE Fighters swarming out of a Star Destroyer, towards a Nebulon-B frigate.
The Clever Dragon tries to avoid the battle, and swoops behind the Star Destroyer as TIE Bombers drop out of the Imperial craft’s belly to race toward the frigate.
The Clever Dragon tries to peel away from the action, and continue about its business, even as a few stray TIE Fighters loop their patrol around and head towards the YT-2500 freighter.
The TIE Bombers fire a tremendous volley of proton torpedoes at the frigate, cracking it in half. The Mandalorian prepares the ship, in case the approaching fighters attack.
The TIE Fighters sweep over the Clever Dragon and ignore the freighter completely as they return to the Star Destroyer.
The Clever Dragon turns its course away from Mon Amara as the Mandalorian and R5 escape.
The credits of the comic strip, identifying where the stock photographs (for backgrounds) were sourced, crediting George Lucas for creating Star Wars, and identifying me (Phil Wrede) as the scriptwriter, character photographer, and letterer of the comic.

The entire story behind this strip is that I wanted to see how my Mandalorian would avoid a Star Destroyer and its TIE Fighter patrol. I’d say he did a pretty good job!

Welcome to PizzaRat dot Net, where I (Phil Wrede) post my toy comics!

The Idea

Comics, but with photos, instead of drawings.

The Process

Using stock photos as backgrounds, and digitally pasting photos of action figures over them. Graphic design software enables the lettering.

The Point

To make comics, to share stories, and to retroactively justify all the money I've spent on action figures over the years.
